WAR? - 20

Excerpts from today at KFA ... the whole message can be listened to at http://www.kenoshafirst.com/ starting Monday each week.

I'm at TARGET not that long ago and I'm listening to a dad getting an explanation from the guy at the video game counter about the new X-BOX game that's coming out. The dad is considering getting it for his kid. The game is all about slaughtering people. SERIOUSLY! The TARGET employee is explaining how they’ll be sold out of the item within 24 hours of getting in a new shipment. You can't believe the excitement people have for a game in which you shoot, maim and kill people. Does anybody see a problem with this?

Man is the most highly developed 'animal' out there. He is the smartest, most complex, most feeling of God’s creations. But that isn’t ALL we are. We are also made in God's image. Man is unique because he alone is capable of conceptual thought and ideas – he alone is equipped with imagination and creativity – he alone is capable of cooperating with God's Divine creative purpose - he alone is placed here with a vast degree of responsibility for the care and well-being of creation.

Man has a moral sensitivity.
Man has a sense of right and wrong – fair and unfair.
Mark Twain: “Man is the only animal that blushes … and has reason to.”
Man has the ability to be communicated to BY God and communicate WITH God.

So when we think about destroying out of vengeance or anger what is made in the image of God, we realize we’re dealing with something of tremendous concern. If God makes man for eternity and gives him the ability to function in relationship with Him … for someone ELSE to destroy that is to destroy God’s Divine intention for that person – almost as if to shake our fist in the face of the Creator God. If God brings someone into being – breathes into his nostrils the breath of life – for man to step in and terminate that existence … I’m just saying that has profound significance and can NOT be entered into lightly.

That is just ONE side of an extremely complicated matter, of course.

But no matter what your view is on war in the 21st century, remember that Scripture calls for the use and discretion of personal conscience in all matters. "Each of us will give an account of himself to God." (Romans 14:12)

Sometimes we immaturely lock our positions in. We don’t do any more SUBMITTING it to God. We … just … KNOW. But even when you come to a place of conviction one way or the other on something like war, you must be mature enough to respect people who hold different convictions. The Bible suggests that you stay open to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. You stay open to future learning. That is very IMPORTANT in these matters. And instead of arguing and judging and devaluing others, we could say, “Would you help me understand how you arrived at your position? What in Scripture has brought you to the place you are? Because as a person with a deep faith in Christ, I want to be someone who can be led and taught by others.”

And then … LISTEN.

And be blessed.

PK, I am not trying to call you out here, but did you not post a blog just last week entitled "Vegan"? In this blog, you seemed to be quite disturbed at the thought of young people becoming vegetarians and basically stated that "meat and potatoes" is the way to go; however, in today's blog you say "if God brings someone into being – breathes into his nostrils the breath of life – for man to step in and terminate that existence …can NOT be entered into lightly." I guess I am just confused as to how God's breathing life into a human is more significant than His breathing life into an animal. Why is it okay for man to kill an animal but unacceptable to kill another man??? I'm sure you are going to say that God placed animals on Earth for us to eat, or that that is the chain of life...but I suppose I just don't see it that way. If you believe in the value of a human life, I don't see how the life of an animal is any less valuable. If you believe God has given life to every creature, each and every one is important to Him, no matter how intelligent or complex. And as you say, we are responsible for the "care and well-being of creation" (your words, not mine). =)

Our pastor spoke on "listening" - REALLY listening yesterday. Not in the same context of course, but interesting that it's how you would end the blog.

See who's reading the blog now! :)

Well - first of all, I have to say -- THANKS FOR READING!!! I appreciate that.

Second -- the "VEGAN" blog was a LITTLE BIT tongue-in-cheek. There was probably some truth there but I meant it a little bit more to tickle a funny bone than trying to be theological.

I don't place all of God's creation on the same level - nor do I believe does He. Man is created with moral sensitivities, creativity and imagination, with the ability to fulfill God's Divine purpose on earth - not to mention there is an eternal soul there. I DO believe man must consciously, wisely and respectfully manage the earth God gave him to rule. The Bible never says 'God breathed life into the nostrils' of any creation but man. Of course, He did create them all, but that phraseology is reserved for man and man alone, and there is something significant to that.

There is so much more that could be said - but in this small space? Who wants to read all that besides you and me. Anyway, I trust my viewpoint on that was respectfully stated. I meant it to be. Blessings.

Okay, not to beat a dead horse, but where exactly is the cutoff as to what is considered morally acceptable as far as killing is concerned? Is it alright to kill a cow but not a cat? Okay to kill a chicken but not a horse? You know, a lot of other countries eat cats and horses, so you cannot say that killing these animals is not okay because they are not killed for food. Many people hunt deer and turkeys for sport...is this acceptable or not? Where do we draw the line?

COURTNEY:
Don't worry. You're not beating a dead horse, but it's interesting imagery.

I don't know that I have the answer to it all. I just know that MAN is made in the image of God. Neither cows, turkeys nor horses are. I believe there should be some sense of compassion for ALL of God's creation - including taking care of the earth and other things - but I don't know where all of those lines are drawn. This is one of those areas I believe God leaves it to our consciences to discover.
